Banter ‘Bout Bad Banners

Here’s a banner ad I stumbled across while I was looking up smutty images and inappropriate videos…

1. URLs end in .com.au not .com/au.
2. A fake warning message… people are still falling for this? What do you mean I’m your 1,000,000th customer!?
3. You spelt you’re incorrectly.
4. Clicking on the ad didn’t even take me to the address shown.
5. And Internet Explorer? C’mon, if you’re not using Firefox or Chrome your not cool in my book.

I wonder if media buyers realise that when they buy space for banner ads, they appear next to “advertising” like this.

I hate it when they can’t even spell or construct a sentence properly. It is a shame this avenue has been wrecked by wankers like these guys.

PS – Love the new text headings on the blog

I agree with the overall sentiment, but the example is somewhat extreme. Do media buyers know, absolutely.

There are shit ads everywhere. In a perfect world you could tick a box and magically never appear in the same context as them .. But it’s not always possible. The medium isn’t the issue here, it’s the execution

just a little tidbit, using .com/au is a standard format for international companies looking to glocalise their online presence. e.g. type in apple.com.au and see it change to .com/au

ps. glocalise is not my term, but my lovely marketing teachers. globalise + localise oh yeah

    @ talkingdigital

I can see where you’re coming from, but not other medium can get away with execution like this, and there in lies the problem.

I am so stealing that word to make me sound smarter.

Good one. Does anyone actually make any money from this spam stuff? Does anyone make money from the spam “just been left a £million – will you put it into your account for me, thing” – hope not ..
