Whose Username Is It Anyway?

I recently hit double digits for the number of times I’ve donated blood. And I’m only 19. I am very passionate about blood donating. In fact, I probably hate you a little bit if you don’t donate regularly.

That’s why I’m pimping out World Blood Donor Day and this campaign by Naked Comms…

Full disclosure says I’ve just finished up an Internship there but that’s not why I’m promoting this campaign. What I found interesting was how the video was submitted under the username, sammygee33.

For me, it raised the question of who should be submitting content on YouTube? Should it be under the brand’s name? The agency’s name? Or perhaps a third party?

Or does it all depend on what will get the most views? If the brand doesn’t have an existing channel, for example in this case, is it worth developing a username for World Blood Donor Day? What implications does this have long term?

This is more so one of those posts that just raises heaps of questions that I’d like you to answer. Let’s see if we can start a conversation without me being a controversial little shit.

The comments you made about B&T are stupid. You should be ashamed of yourself. Now what was that thing about giving blood?

Good ol' anonymous comments. Seriously, any one who makes a personal attack behind a wall should HAVE A F'CKING AXE PICK TAKEN TO THEIR EYE SOCKET.

Anyways mate, this is a massive question – and one I deal with day to day. And ultimately, it varies from client to client, campaign (i hate that word) to campaign.

Give me a buzz if u wanna talk about this further. I often rant on too long about it

    'ere, 'ere Jye.

I'm all for posting under the client's name for You Tube video's. When posting on YouTube it's not just the video which is communicating the message but the intro, profile, links and comments – it's all part of the same package. Having it from an agency or a third party waters down the message and stops the flow of info to the next video or site about that brand. Mind you, if you plan on posting no more that one video (and exiting the community) then there is no point in this!

Maybe this confusion signals the death of YouTube? 😉

"I probably hate you a little bit if you don't donate regularly."

Hope this hate doesn't apply to gay men, who are unable to donate blood due to the Red Cross' discriminatory policy which refuses blood from men who have had male-to-male sex within the last 12 months (even if that sex was safe and their medical history is clear).

Sorry bro, not ashamed. Actually quite happy with the outcome. Change is already taking place, the exact response I wanted from the post. Perhaps I'd do it a tad different in the future but can't complain with the result.

    Go donate blood.

    @ Jye

You are more than welcome to rant here my boy, particularly after what I've just done.

    @ Nathan

Good point about if it's not going to be a long term thing. But the long tail says the video will always be out there, something to consider.

And of course I threw in something a little controversial for someone to bite at. ;]

    @ Anonymous 2

If you can't donate because they won't let you, not because you don't want to then I do not hate you. In fact, I'm all for supporting your argument. :]

thanks for reminding me to call the blood bank back. in the last 3 months i have been able to donate for the first time ever (covered in tatts i be) and offered to donate after the bushfires. they got such an influx of offers they were unable to deal with them all (yay!). now that it's all calmed down a little, i better ask them again.
i have to say, i liked the 'lucky you, you can donate' campaign the best – turned shame into pride and duty into desire. tick.

I definitely think there's something in "You just saved three lives, wear your bandage with honour".

I really like this ad, funny but to the point. As for what username the video should be posted by I think the client is best to set up their own ID/Channel/whatever. Transparency works best. I don't think any client/agency can risk being seen as trying to dupe audiences/users any more.

Anonymous 2: It's the same for English people (on account of our BSE-soaked plasma). If my corpuscles ain't good enough for ya…

As for anonymity – not a fan. If you made it, you should be proud of it.

In this case there doesn't seem to be active deception. The only issue you have with sammygee33 posting it is that sammy has also posted stuff like "Inside Sport Hot Bikini Models" – which may or may not help from a branding perspective.

"So if I give blood, will there be hot chicks in bikinis?"
"Er no, just a cup of tea and a sense of fulfilment."
    "Oh…"
